While it is true that Baby Boomers are embracing internet dating with gusto, many report a disappointing experience. Perhaps, they need to think about what it is they are looking for at this stage of life. As a psychotherapist who works with clients in life transitions, I offer these thoughts.
Baby Boomers have different goals and needs than the younger folks using Internet dating sites. This is because they are in a different life stage. Knowing and understanding these difference can make your experience of midlife dating more enjoyable.
Baby Boomers have had prior love relationships—usually at least one marriage. They have had their share of loss, pain and disappointment. Chances are they have experienced illness and the death of a loved one. They also have raised children, fulfilled some dreams, and many are professionally accomplished. They have faced huge challenges. They know great joy and deep sorrow. Many are caretakers to elderly parents or grandkids. Their vast experience changes their perception of life and partnership from when they were younger.
Their circumstances are different from the Generation Xers. An unmarried twenty-something is looking for a partner with whom to have children, build careers and create a life. Often they have had no significant relationship disappointment and no prior marriages or children.
Boomers have built a life and are looking for someone with whom they can share it. They may be retired, which means more time to spend with a partner, but it may mean less or a fixed income. Rather than being “upwardly mobile,” Boomers usually are enjoying the fruits of their youth, but need to watch their pennies. Furthermore, over their lifetime, Baby Boomers have developed strong belief systems—what they value, what they believe and who they vote for.
No longer looking to raise a family together or build careers together, Boomers are looking for someone to share the hard times as well as the fun times. Again, twenty-something’s think less about illness and end-of-life issues. Baby Boomers, while kicking and screaming about getting older, realize that life is short, people get sick and die, pensions can disappear and the unexpected happens. They have confronted disappointments and dealt with crisis. They are looking for someone with grit and strength to hang in there when the times get tough.
By taking sometime to explore what kind of relationship they REALLY want at this stage in life, Baby Boomers are less likely to set themselves up for disappointment.

Yup!! I 100% agree with the eat often small little meals. If you try to "FAST" your body will literally think it is starving to death and hold onto everything...including water weight. You can't really blame it can you. Its just nature doing its thing.

I also found out that 1 or 2 TBS of coconut oil helps to really burn the fat or even olive oil...just add it to salads or anything else and watch what happens...you will be lighter in no time.

I agree fitness is important...do SOMETHING to jumpstart your metabolism..your body can only do so much w/out a little exercise :0

Great stuff, thanks!

I like the point that you made about over excercising. The motivation for this is simply wanting too much too fast. Sticking to a diet plan as you said is the key to healthy weight control.
